SHN Fashion and Grooming House

Hi and welcome to my website, SHN Model Lifestyle! My name is Sandeep and I am Banglore based Freelance Modeler and has been working in the entertainment industry over last 3 years. My goal with this site is to give you my best tips on style, grooming and fitness. I also want to share with you my personal life experiences from the past few years as a model ,while motivating you to achieve your goals in life.

Decide what type of modeling you wanted to become:

Know yourself and your strengths! That means you need to be honest with yourself. You need to play to your strengths and take it from there, that is the first thing you can do if you want to be a successful model. Do some research and decide about what kind of modeling fits your personality, your body, and your face the best.

High Fashion models or Runway models are generally at least 5’11″. Designers usually pick the models with that height range to showcase their best designs. Hence it is very little chance for short models to get shows whereas, on the other hand, we have commercial modeling, where models can be a little shorter and their body type are more diverse. Catalog shoots, television advertisements, etc.. will come under commercial modeling and others like swimsuit models are often named as glamour models. They usually maintain a well-toned physique.

Build Your Modeling Portfolio :

My First Portfolio shot :P

Professional photographers are very much essential for fresher to begin with a modeling career. You need to tell your photographer what pictures should project which will depend on the field/market you are targeting. If a professional photographer is quite expensive, you can also look for fresh photographers or the photography interns where they will be looking for fresh models. Approach such photographers and have collaborated shoot with them so that they can build their profiles with your pictures while giving you pictures well.

Generally, your portfolio shoot should include headshots, mid-shot, a face from different angles and full-length shots. Meet the photographer prior to shoot day and discuss the costumes, accessories, and styling.  If you’re going for commercial modeling, make sure you include a decent amount of smiling shots. The other type of model must have an equal or larger amount of straight-faced shots. Add brief details on the measurement of your body, skin tone, and eye color.

Get exposed to the market with the right modeling agencies :

The next step after getting the portfolio pictures is to get signed by a modeling agency. Do research on the internet to find the right agencies in your city and submit your profile to them. Agencies will call you for a face to face interview where they mention it as casting because they wanted to make sure your current look, skin condition are the same as in the picture. I am going to give you more information about Casting in my upcoming posts.

Most of the top Agencies work with established brands, designers and tv channels, we can call them as clients for agencies. Usually, clients approach the agencies about what they looking for and agencies will help them to find the right person in their list by presenting their profiles. This is how agencies generally work.

There are different markets in modeling, and choosing the one that you are best suited to will have a major impact on your success. Some of the most popular Modeling Categories are listed below that might help you to realize where you fit in and start your career in the modeling industry :

1.Runway Fashion Modeling :

Runway/Ramp is a platform where the models pose to display clothing, fashion accessories, footwear by walking along a narrow stage in front of an audience. The fashion industry is very strict about height criteria and has high, and sometimes unreasonable standards. For Male models, it is between 5'11" to 6'" and for Female Models, it ranges between 5'8".These kinds of fashion models are the highest paid and rarest form of modeling.

2. Commercial Modeling :

Commercial models make up the majority of all modeling. It includes many fields of modeling such as catalog, print-work, plus-size, swimsuit, etc. Clients hire models to help in selling their products. They can also work for television, commercials, websites, magazines, newspapers, billboards and any other type of advertisement. It means that you are not currently high fashion material, but still pretty/handsome enough to make it as a model.

3. Fitness Modeling:

A fitness model both male and female should be lean and fit, with firm muscle tone. Magazine advertisements often use these fitness models. There are no height criteria for fitness modeling. They also work as fitness trainers and take part in the fitness-related competition as well.

4.Plus-Size Modeling:

Those individuals whose measurements are larger than editorial fashion models can be categorized into plus-size models. They involve in advertisements of plus size clothing, cosmetics, fashion accessories, etc. Plus-size models are increasingly taking part in fashion editorials and becoming part of the fashion industry. More designers are considering making clothes for the plus-size market.

These are the major types of modeling and also we have another kind of modeling like part models where models having attractive parts such as legs, chest, lips, etc. are hired to showcase their accessories /products. Some agencies solely represent models who are hired for their body parts.

So the next thing is How do I start my Modeling Career? I am going to write on it in my next post on how you develop skills to fit into particular model categories. I hope it would be useful for aspiring fashion models like you. Thank you!
